Abstract

In September 2019 Singaraja City experienced a deflation as deep as -0.87 percent with the Consumer Price Index (CPI 2012 = 100) of 145.22. The calendar year inflation rate was 2.07 percent and the year-on-year inflation rate (September 2019 against September 2018 or YoY) was as high as 2.99 percent.

Deflation (m to m) is indicated by a decrease in the index in one expenditure group, namely group I (food stuff) as deep as -3.28 percent. While the groups that recorded an increase in index or inflation were group IV (clothing) as high as 0.21 percent; group III (housing, water, electricity and fuel) as high as 0.11 percent; group VII (transport, communication and financial services) as high as 0.09 percent; group II (processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco) as high as 0.08 percent; group V (health) as high as 0.06 percent; and group VI (education, recreation and sports) as high as 0.04 percent.

Commodities recorded contributing or contributing to deflation in September 2019 include cayenne pepper, purebred chicken, bananas, shallots, garlic, bean sprouts, vegetable tomatoes, red chilies, cooking oil and long beans.

From 82 CPI cities, 70 cities experienced deflation and 12 cities experienced inflation. The deepest deflation was recorded in Sibolga City (North Sumatra) as deep as -1.94 percent while the shallow deflation was recorded in Surabaya (East Java) as deep as -0.02 percent. Meanwhile, the highest inflation was recorded in Meulaboh City (Aceh) as high as 0.91 percent while the lowest inflation was recorded in Watampone City (South Sulawesi) and Palopo (South Sulawesi) each as high as 0.01 percent. If ranked from the deepest deflation, Singaraja ranks 10th out of 70 cities experiencing deflation.
